A new model for a new Indian Cacao


Introduced in the 1960s by a multinational corporation, cacao arrived in India primarily as an industrial chocolate ingredient. Unfortunately, over the last 60 years, Indian Cacao’s flavour has suffered significantly, as productivity became the sole focus.

At Distinct Origins, we are shifting the focus back to the Indian Cacao’s untapped flavour potential. Through long-term partnerships with our 100+ farmer-member community and radical advancements in fermentation and drying techniques at our one-of-a-kind Cacao Fermentery, we are unlocking a new world of flavours for craft chocolate makers around the globe.

A new origin for the world to discover

Our journey begins in the fertile West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Blessed by the River Godavari, this land sustains abundant cacao growth with a distinct flavour profile. The cacao is farmed amidst lush tropical flora such as banana, areca nut and long pepper, which lend unique flavour nuances to our cacao.

Although it is the largest cacao-growing region in the country, it is still relatively unknown as a fine-flavoured cacao origin owing to its industrial focus. At Distinct Origins, we aim to change that and bring recognition to this exceptional origin and its remarkable produce.

Taking ownership of post-harvest processes

Cacao’s post-harvest processes have been conventionally carried out by the farmer, often in rudimentary ways. Recognising their vital role in flavour development, we decided to take full ownership of these processes at our state-of-the-art Cacao Fermentery in West Godavari. This not only ensures meticulous control but also relieves the farmers of the cost and effort required for these laborious tasks.

Scientific fermentation and drying protocols

We have made significant progress in the fermentation and drying processes of  the Indian Cacao through extensive trials. Our science-based interventions, enabled by our proprietary technology, give us enhanced control to achieve the desired flavours consistently. All the processing data is also digitally recorded and made available to chocolate makers who wish to craft their chocolate from the very beginning.

Our farmer-members are carefully selected based on their cultivation and harvest practices, as well as their commitment to upholding strict quality protocols. We ensure that they are paid a significant premium within a 24-hour time span, which is facilitated through our fully transparent digital platform.

Every part of our bean’s journey is meticulously recorded on our blockchain-enabled platform; right from the farm and the farmer, to the purchase transaction, to the harvest date, to all the post-harvest processes carried out at our Cacao Fermentery until it’s packed and shipped to finally reach you.
